Classic Brioche French Toast

There are several stories about the origins of French Toast… the earliest recipe can be found in the 5th century AD, near to the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. And, we’re certainly not suggesting that there’s a correlation between the rise in popularity of Pan Dulcis (French Toast) and the fall of the Roman Empire. The next story has a man by the name of French—Joseph French, creating this breakfast dish in 1724—Joe advertised it as “French Toast”, and by leaving out the apostrophe, he created the confusion between French, the person and the country. Now, join us at Pond Mountain Inn on November 28th to celebrate National French Toast Day!

Who was Augustus Saint-Gaudens?

In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt felt that United States coins are symbols of our Nation’s pride and America’s spirit. By 1905, America had become the most powerful nation in the world, and Roosevelt wanted our coinage to represent America’s pre-eminent position. Roosevelt shared his vision with Saint-Gaudens who eagerly joined his quest to design the finest coinage in the world. Saint-Gaudens was terminally ill with cancer, yet he began his last artistic quest to re-design America’s coinage, beginning with the obverse of the $10 Eagle and $20 both sides of the $20 double eagle.  Saint-Gaudens promised Roosevelt, that the coin would be made a “living thing.”

The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle $20 gold coin is widely thought to be the most beautiful coin in the world. Featuring a full figure Lady Liberty striding forward with an olive branch and a torch in the other hand. On the reverse side is an eagle flying in front of the sun to complement the obverse side. The motto In God We Trust is along the edge of the sun at the bottom.

Please visit the Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park in Cornish, New Hampshire. The home, gardens, and studios of Augustus Saint-Gaudens are beautifully preserved. One of America’s foremost sculptors, this was his summer residence from 1885 to 1897, his permanent home from 1900 until his death in 1907, and the center of the Cornish Art Colony. And, less than 90-minutes from Pond Mountain Inn.

Much of the abbreviated content was taken from the Saint-Gaudens National Historical Site.

Vegetarian Breakfast Eggs Benedict Florentine at Pond Mountain Inn

Our farm-to-table Eggs Benedict Florentine served this morning al fresco combine the culinary skills of creating the perfect poached egg, homemade tangy hollandaise sauce, sautéed spinach and garlic with a thinly sliced homegrown tomato on a toasted Vermont English muffin. This is a guest favorite whether vegetarian or not.

Many consider Eggs Benedict Florentine a somewhat simple adaptation of eggs Benedict, the dish is thought to have originated with Catherine de Medici, the Florence-born wife to France’s King Henry II. Legend has it the young queen was particularly fond of spinach… And, most agree that Eggs Benedict originate from New York City—now, its precise origins become a little murky. Delmonico’s, in Manhattan say it was created in their kitchen in 1860, and another account has a hungover retired Wall Street banker wondering into the Waldorf Hotel looking for a “hangover cure” and ordered what has now become the traditional ingredients of the classic Eggs Benedict.

What makes our Eggs Benedict Florentine, and our Eggs Benedict so delicious is that we only use all local ingredients—our eggs come directly from the farm, and sometimes within a few hours of being laid. Generally, chickens lay their eggs either in the early morning or mid-morning, usually within six hours of sunrise, but sometimes there are already eggs in the nesting boxes when our neighbor opens up the coop. Occasionally, we have duck eggs, for those looking for something distinctive.

Lake George Dining at The Sagamore Resort

Look no further… this is our absolute favorite summertime place to have cocktails and dinner, and we always arrive precisely at 5:00 pm to get the best table on the veranda—the views of Lake George and the Adirondacks are beyond spectacular!

This early al fresco dinner on the deck at The Sagamore is always spectacular and was continually repeated last year! A nice breeze off the water made for a very comfortable outdoor dining experience. Make sure to ask for Calvin, our server was gracious, elegant and charmingly funny.

Many of our guests have enjoyed the same extraordinary dining experience at the Sagamore! And, I almost forgot; the lobster ravioli was probably the best I’ve ever had… This landmark hotel & resort with a prestigious history that dates back to the 1880s is secluded on a private 70-acre island just over an hour from Pond Mountain Inn. Along with an inspiring setting in the heart of the Adirondacks, the award-winning dining is alone worth the drive!

Greyhound Cocktail

Brief Background

Kay just discovered this cocktail—it’s a delightful warm-summer-day drink that may even rival the ubiquitous Gin & Tonic! The Greyhound origins date back to about 1930, but took off in popularity fifteen years later. It wasn’t until 1945 when Harper’s Magazine officially named the cocktail  “greyhound” given its popularity at Greyhound bus terminals…

Ingredients

Makes Two Cocktails

Two Florida Pink or Ruby Red Grapefruits. Natalie’s Gourmet Grapefruit Juice is an excellent substitute.

One Fresh Whole Lime

Vermont Barr Hill Gin—the raw honey infused gin makes the perfectly balanced cocktail.

Add Maple syrup or simple syrup if too tart.

Steps

Robustly squeeze grapefruit halves using a larger vintage glass citrus juicer and pour juice through strainer into Pyrex measuring cup.

Delicately squeeze each lime half using same juicer, then pour through strainer into the same measuring cup.

Generously fill two Old Fashioned glasses with ice.

Fill glasses with ⅓ Barr Hill Gin and ⅔ freshly squeezed grapefruit and lime juice.

Garnish with lime wheel, wedge or decorative grapefruit peel.

Now, comfortably slide back in your Adirondack chairs and enjoy this amazing 1930s vintage cocktail.

Please take a look at our incredibly interesting website. We’re always doing fun at Pond Mountain Inn!

Our Chaplain Orchard Road Trip took us to Shacksbury Cider At Vergennes Vermont – Another Serendipitous Discovery

Our Chaplain Orchard Road Trip took us to Shacksbury Cider – Another Serendipitous Discovery! Located in Vergennes it is only a little over an hour from Pond Mountain Inn.
Tasting rooms are all around Vermont – and, Shacksbury Cider is as intimate as they come. With only a few tables, conversation spilled over with other visitors. We tasted five different hard ciders and lined up our favorites on the bar – I’ve never had hard cider before!
We learned more about Shacksbury Cider and more about our fascinating bartender – she was far more than just a bartender, but that’s another story! She lives on a farm ten minutes away, which took us to our next adventure…
