Barr Hill Produces The Finest Gin and Vodka

Time for another road trip back to Caledonia Spirits, makers of Barr Hill Gin, America’s most awarded gin. Our last visit, pre-COVID, we found ourselves sitting at their sleek gray bar with hip mixologists dispensing delicious hand-crafted cocktails—we were fascinated at the hustle and bustle, the frenetic pace was mesmerizing as we settled in to experience Vermont’s cocktail revolution. We are hoping for another captivating visit to Barr Hill in the coming weeks.

Don’t Miss Bee’s Knees Week • September 24 – October 3, 2021

“The phrase “bee’s knees” was prohibition-era slang for “the best.” This classic cocktail born from the prohibition era combines gin, lemon, and honey. This cocktail is especially important to the Barr Hill family. Each year we celebrate Bee’s Knees Week, a spotlight on the importance of bees in our food and drink system, and a community of bartenders working together to save the bees.” Learn more about the immense importance of bees, the threats they face and what can be done to help.   caledoniaspirits.com

We Love This Little Slice Of Vermont Life – Featured in Yankee Magazine – Poorhouse Pies In Underhill, Vermont

Last year Kay and I along with a guest drove two hours from Pond Mountain Inn to serve ourselves at this tiny pie shed, Poorhouse Pies in Underhill, Vermont! But we wanted more, after all they were featured in Yankee Magazine. We walked fifty feet hoping to meet the owners and to see where the pies were made. In the side door of a tiny yellow farmhouse we entered a correspondingly tiny commercial kitchen that was barely enough space to accommodate the owners. Paula and Jamie told us that on holiday weekends they make about 120 pies and always sell out. The three of us bought 6-7 pies and had a pie tasting a few days later! We loved this little slice of Vermont life!

Belted Galloway Beef Cheeseburger – Spring Brook Farm Vermont

Looks like an ordinary cheeseburger, right!?!? This Belted Galloway Beef Cheeseburger was one of the best burger we’ve ever had at Spring Brook Farm, Reading, Vermont. Two guests who joined Kay and I were unanimously agreed!  Well-marbled with just enough fat content, rich mouthfeel, strong beef flavor, but not gamey, and a near-grill aroma combined with a weighty in-hand presence created a multi-layered sensory experience for the eyes, nose and mouth. Join us as we tour their extraordinary dairy farm where they produce award winning cheese.

Donuts Worth Getting up Early For Are From King Bakery Donut Cart

Kay and I were told to get there early, and we did, only to find 14 people ahead of us with the same idea. It was a refreshing 32° as we waited 20 minutes for our turn. Then, Kay sprang into action as I watched a team of 3-4 people ferrying donuts to the cart. We bought an assorted dozen and had to include a photo of this glorious donut that emerged as the most photogenic of the bunch and one we had to eat!

A donut experience that you’ll never forget along with a beautiful early Sunday morning drive it is worth the trip. You can experience these donuts for yourself at The King Bakery Donut Cart, located in Cambridge, New York, just under an hour’s drive from Pond Mountain Inn.  They are only open Sundays.

Just beyond Woodstock is Quechee… We had a spectacular lunch at Simon Pearce Restaurant a few weeks back – overlooking the falls is why this was voted one of “America’s Most Romantic Restaurants” by Travel and Leisure.
