The Incredible Natural Benefits of Hiking and Walking

Pond Mountain Overlooking St. Lake Catherine • Wells, Vermont.

Exercise – not meaningfully for over six years, so I’m beginning slowly. I’m 62, a former athlete, three knee operations under my belt along with two hernias and a third not far away, so I need to be even more careful than most. And, now with social distancing and gym closures, any formal exercise is out of the question. But, there’s good news… Vermont!

Of course, we all know a thirty-minute brisk walk every day is incredibly beneficial – helps maintain a healthy weight; prevents or helps manage heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and strengthens your bones and muscles. So, tell me something I don’t already know…

Hiking, especially in nature is so powerful especially for our health and well-being that leading-edge doctors are prescribing hiking in addition to traditional treatments for disease. Research this for yourselves, but evidence suggests that hiking in dense forests may provide far more benefits due to certain organic compounds that trees emit that boost mood and improve our overall mental and emotional health.

We’ve been actively hiking for the last two weeks and we found ourselves happier, more creative and calmer despite the many hardships that this coronavirus pandemic is causing. Maybe it’s that we’re getting far more oxygen to our brain, eliminating massive sensory-overload, and the mental fatigue that comes from the persistent daily demands of life. Join us in Vermont amongst the thousands of square miles of forested mountain terrain that many would call the epicenter of happiness… at Pond Mountain Inn.

Pond Mountain Inn COVID-19 Protocols and Response

Updated: March 10, 2021

Our Commitment

Travel remains largely different—everything is different, and perhaps different is now the new state of normalcy. We begin the year cautiously optimistic with vaccine distribution improving and vaccinations on the rise, things may be better, and we hope a lot better with each passing month. Safety continues to be our highest priority. Relaxation, wellness, tranquility, happiness, adventure and enhanced outdoor activities have always been our specialties, and despite the new challenges presented by Covid-19, we continue to be fully prepared to offer our guests the complete Vermont experience that they have come to love.

We’re incredibly vigilant with cleanliness, and with our new protocols firmly in place for almost one year, we are well positioned for the upcoming 2021 season. And, let’s not forget the forgotten weapon in the fight against the coronavirus—fresh air and sunlight. Even in the winter months, between guest visits, we open all the windows and replace warm stale air with fresh cold outside air that massively reduces the chances transmitting the virus.

It’s also comforting to know, and to expect that we continue cleaning the floors, as we did this past summer, on our hands and knees with disinfectant and bounty towel. You’ll never see anyone carrying a mop from one suite to the next! We’re doing whatever it takes earn your trust, and we are doing everything possible to keep you and your family safe.

Winter Dining at Pond Mountain Inn

Out of respect for CDC regulations and the Vermont Department of Health we continue offering breakfast dining in the Main House dining room. In the winter months we only have one family on premises at a time. However, we continue to work individually with each guest to determine the ideal dining venue for their needs that include bringing breakfast to the Loft Suite. Our daily breakfast menus are as robust and creative as ever, featuring the best local and regional ingredients available.

Sanitation

As one of Vermont’s premier boutique inns, Pond Mountain Inn has always maintained the highest level of cleanliness and sanitization. Additional safety protocols include:

  • Health and temperature checks before the start of each day.
  • Extra vigilant staff hand washing practices.
  • Higher-frequency cleaning and disinfection throughout all public areas.
  • Selected cleaning agents to reduce viral transmission on surfaces.
  • Deep cleaning and disinfection of suites between visits.

We’re Ready for Your Visit!

Everyone Drinks Bottled Water – But Not At Pond Mountain Inn!

When’s the last time you drank water directly from the tap instead of bottled water? Water at Pond Mountain Inn is exceptional; independently lab tested and is delivered from a 360 foot deep artesian well. By the time it reaches your glass, our water has been filtered twice and has passed through ultraviolet disinfection technology. By the time our water reaches the cottage it has passed through an additional filter and ultraviolet light. Our water is crisp, clean and delicious!

Not all water is the same. The Svalbard Islands are located in the Arctic Ocean, halfway between Norway and the North Pole boasts some of the most expensive and finest water on the planet – 750ml at $150! Maybe it’s so expensive because they must scrape the ice from icebergs or glaciers. Then there’s water from Copenhagen, often considered the best tasting water from the tap. How about water on the International Space Station? Now, think about how and where that gets recycled – surely not so pleasing to the palate.

So, the next time you’re a guest at Pond Mountain Inn consider bringing a five gallon refillable water jug and taking some of this precious resource back home!

Chippy’s First Video… This is Adorable!

We love our little chipmunk, Chippy. He joins us throughout the day – mostly in the morning and conveniently at the cocktail hour. Chippy is enormously responsive – he always comes when called regardless of the distance and our guests feed him too! I decided to video him the other day…. Turn up the volume and listen. It’s my first wildlife video so be slightly patient. It’s always an adventure at Pond Mountain Inn!

“Chippy” Says Spring is Here…

chippy_march-2017_700

Prognosticator Punxsutawney Phil called for six more weeks of winter; however Pond Mountain Inn has its own prognosticator, “Chippy”. Our adorable little chipmunk arose from his winter’s nap yesterday looking a little groggy, a tad plump and a touch timid, but today he’s alert and had his morning breakfast. It looks like spring may be here!

Sledding In Vermont at Pond Mountain Inn

The snow has abated, but the northern winds continued… Adorned in snow apparel with sleds in hand Kay and I ventured outside to take advantage of the property’s undulating terrain. Well bundled with only our faces exposed we soon realized that the 12° afternoon temperature combined with gusting winds put the wind chill somewhere just below zero. Fifteen minutes and four short downhill rides later we hurried back inside where we were reunited our new wood burning stove – 650° provided great comfort. Maybe we’ll try again tomorrow.

Christmas Tree Recycling – Give It To The Goats

christmas-tree-disposal

Kay and I were visiting our neighbor down the road at Mountain Ledge Farm – they have both Nubian and Alpine goats running around in their pasture and raises them for their milk. Six beautiful babies were born less than a month ago and they are beyond adorable!!

Courtney brought up a question that surprised both Kay and I; she asked, “What are you planning to do with your Christmas tree after the season?” “Well”, I replied, “we haven’t given it much thought, but it’s likely going to find its way into the woods or the landfill.” Courtney had a better idea…. Now everyone knows that goats eat just about everything, but did you know they eat Christmas trees?

Two great things came of this, a special treat for the goats and we have the opportunity to recycle our Christmas tree in a natural and very environmental method to keep these trees out of the landfill.
