Elegantly Fishing Lake St Catherine Vermont

Adventure Wellness • Experience the Unfamiliar

Some of the finest trout lakes and rivers are here in Vermont – so what, right! It’s difficult to understand the joy of sitting precariously on some wooden boat plank, struggling to convince a huge nightcrawler of the benefits of the hook in my other hand, then sending both into the lake at whatever depth that assures an unsuccessful day… So far, this is my portrayal of fishing.

I really don’t know how to fish, and I don’t want to spend the time learning—but I want to going fishing with someone that takes care of it all. Problem solved! We’ve taken the drudgery out of recreational lake fishing and made it into a relaxing, meditative wellness practice capable of delivering peace and tranquility to those determined to go somewhere beautiful and experience the health benefits of spending time outside and the exhilaration of reeling in big fish!

We’re catching Brown Trout (in the photo), Rainbow Trout, Bass, Perch, Northern Pike or any of the other 90-plus species of fish that are abundant throughout the state…. And it’s exciting!

Beautiful Tour Of The Shores On Lake St. Catherine Vermont

Exploring Lake St. Catherine from the water or simply tour the shore by car offers breathtaking views of the lake. Early mornings are uniquely tranquil – only interrupted with the exhilaration of witnessing a soaring bald eagle; we’ll supply the field glasses! Touring the lake by car takes about an hour visiting all the inlets – grab lunch at Wells Country Store and picnic on the beach.

Our Hike at the Lewis Deane Nature Preserve Vermont

Many of us are already talking about an early spring after the recent snowfall and warmer temperatures forecasted this week. Sacrilegious yes, given there’s likely two winter months left; however it gave pause and a thought of a hike I took last summer not far from the inn. The Lewis Deane Nature Preserve, an 85-acre forest located on St. Catherine Mountain is just over one mile north of Pond Mountain Inn. Last summer, together with two guests, we enjoyed this moderate twenty-five minute one-way hike to the top — however, there’s a slightly longer more leisurely option to the mountain’s summit. I elected the more aggressive route up the mountain, which I had no difficulty ascending; however after my third knee surgery two years ago maybe I’ll think about taking the easier path back to base next time – the descent was tough on the knees. Once we reached the top we were completely awestruck with the picture postcard mountain views. My photograph certainly suggests that this is a “must do” again this spring / summer.

Skating On The Ice At Little Lake Vermont

morning-skate

A cold but-not-too-cold twenty degree winter’s day on Little Lake, the sister lake of Lake Saint Catherine, is where we spent the morning skating. Brilliant blue skies and protected from the winds by neighboring mountains transformed the morning into a Currier and Ives moment. Ice fishermen and two distance groups of skaters discovered what we discovered on this magical day in Vermont — peace and tranquility in this surreal setting far, far away.

A quarter mile from shore we skated up to meet the two fishermen – a father teaching his boy to fish just as his father taught him years ago. “Back in 1947 my father caught a Northern Pike that measured forty inches”, the father said. He didn’t say much about his current take, but I’m guessing that it didn’t quite measure up to that day seventy years ago! Still though, a good story…

We met the other skaters – one with ski poles and two others with some kind of Norwegian skates that I’d never seen before; almost like speed skates with ski boots. We were the only ones with hockey skates and sticks chasing after missed passes that required retrieval a hundred yards down ice. I almost preferred to miss the pass – the morning was exhilarating and something I haven’t done in fifty years!

Every day is an adventure at Pond Mountain Inn here in Vermont – waking up planning to do one thing only to find yourself skating on a lake trying to recreate what once was….
