One Room schoolhouses are treasured here in Vermont and the Hollow Schoolhouse is one of a many that is still a part of our landscape. Built in 1832 it rests at Hildene, the Lincoln Family Summer Home in Manchester, Vermont. The school house is fully restored and provides lessons and tasks for children to experience what it was like in the early days. They are provided with reproduction slates, quill pens for their lessons and during recess play the old time games.
Very few know this interesting story! “Peggy” Lincoln Beckwith (1898-1975), the great-granddaughter of Abraham Lincoln flew her biplane from the meadow behind this one-room school house and kept her plane parked next to the school.
Plan your visit, only a half hour from the Bed and Breakfast!
