A series of serendipitous events led us to what is now known as Pond Mountain Inn. We searched for years – maybe as much as eight for the “right property”. We spent a majority of our time searching in Connecticut, much farther north from where I was raised. Our journey still took us farther north following the “Route 7 Corridor” out of Connecticut, bypassing Massachusetts into Vermont. We wanted a New England Antique Reproduction, and finding one in Connecticut that met our criteria was virtually impossible – financially. Undaunted, we began exploring Vermont more enthusiastically, but with one problem, my wife Kay was absolutely never going to live there – never! Kay was a “good sport” and always humored me on each real estate foray into Vermont.

Wells, Vermont is where we found this interesting traditional 1800s antique  reproduction eyebrow cape, and the fact that the current owners were running as a bed and breakfast was a little interesting. Shortening the story, we visited the property twice over a six month period before directly contacting the owners to suggest that the only way we could make a decision about the property and its location was to spend the weekend as their guests – they agreed. The week leading up to our visit was interesting – remember; Kay was never going to live in Vermont. She delivered every excuse from weather conditions that weekend to “what are we going to do in Vermont” to one day should be sufficient to make a decision – a valiant and unrelenting attempt to subvert the weekend, but we still went. The Saturday we arrived was an absolutely magnificent July day – the owners could not have been happier with how the property was being presented – it was perfect! We spent the entire day with them on the property and dined outside that evening. Kay and I didn’t really discuss our thoughts until the next morning when we awakened to a glorious view of the adjacent of the mountain when Kay said, “we have to buy this place!” It was the “wow factor” that did it for us. We closed three months later.

We wanted to return to New England and find a traditional antique reproduction home and property with expansive views. Our inn rises from a country dirt-road nestled against lush Pond Mountain with dramatic neighboring views of Northeast Mountain – beyond the great lawn the property border to the north has visible remnants of a long-standing farmers stonewall that leads to our neighbor’s beautiful pond, expansive meadows and a distant antique farm house.

The Main House is a traditional antique reproduction eyebrow cape that has a magnificent living room with Rumford fireplace, exposed hand-hewn beams and paneled walls with fine antiques and original oil paintings. The dining room is enchanting that accommodates ten, but is better with eight, is lit with a beautiful formal crystal chandelier.

Our neighbors give us their Araucana or Ameraucana fresh bluish green eggs when available or we simply visit the local farm three miles from the property and pickup fresh milk, eggs and grass fed beef – just farther is where we buy our pure Vermont Maple Syrup. Still farther, we have available an abundance of organic meats, organic fruits & vegetables, artisan bread & cheeses. The experience is indescribable with unique offerings from each small town we visit. I half expect to see Norman Rockwell standing next to me with an exquisite basket of produce suitable for his next canvas.
